Attila is a chapter in class 6 DAV English literature book. The story has been written by a famous writer R.K. Narayan. Attila is a story of a dog who lives in a family of three people. A young boy who adored Attila a lot and could not bear anyone criticizing his dog. Attila was very friendly with the strangers coming at home. This behaviour of the dog was not liked by the boy’s father and mother.

They brought him to the house to make sure their house is safe from thieves. Attila never barked at anyone. Someone stole flowers from the garden but Attila did not do anything.

1. Why did the family buy Attila?

Ans 1. The family bought Attila because a series of thefts and housebreakings took place in the neighbourhood houses. His family members had more trust in a dog rather than the police.

2. What was Attila’s attitude towards strangers

Attila was very friendly with all the strangers that came to the house. He became very friendly with bill vendors, postman, and other people

3. What was Attila’s reaction when he saw Ranga stealing the valuables? How far was it in accordance with Ranga’s expectations

Attila kept quiet and did not even bark. In fact, he became friendly with the thief Ranga and liked him a lot. He started licking Ranga’s hands and rolled his eyes. He followed the thief as he wanted to roam the streets freely.

It was totally unexpected from the dog. Ranga got shocked to see such behaviour of a dog. He expected that the dog would bark and make noise after seeing him stealing the jewellery.

4.Why was Ranga fed up with Attila?

Ranga was fed up with Attila because he liked him, he licked his hands and decided to follow him. He kept running after him on the streets and would not leave him alone

5. How did the family members react to Attila’s disappearance?

The family members created a sensation in the house. The mother screamed as she thought that the dog had run away with the burglar.

The boy’s father was happy that at last, the useless dog left their house. He in fact thanked the thief for taking him away.

6. Why did Attila run after Ranga? What did others conclude from his chase?

Attila ran after Ranga because he did not want to lose his friend, Ranga at any cost. He ran because Ranga was running scared of the young boy. Attila ran so fast that he blocked Ranga’s way and Ranga fell to the ground.

The young boy sat on him and grabbed him. After knowing all this incident everyone concluded that that the dog was very brave and has helped in catching the thief

Is Attila really a hero? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans. No Attila is not a hero. He was quite friendly with all the strangers. When Ranga came to the house in order to steal the valuables, the dog did not bark at all. Attila liked Ranga and started licking his hands. He ran with Ranga because he had the ambition to roam in the streets freely.

When the young boy shouted at Attila, the thief started running scared of him. Attila did not want to lose his friend Ranga so he ran faster and accidentally blocked his way. The thief fell and was caught by the young boy.

Everyone thought that the thief was caught because of the dog’s bravery but the truth was that he liked the thief and did not want to lose his company.

B. All said and done, Attila was a bad watchdog. Do you agree?

Ans. Attila was a bad watchdog because he did not do things expected from him. A dog’s duty is to keep a watch on the house and prevent strangers from stealing or entering without permission.

Attila maintained a friendly bond with everyone including the postman, the bill vendors, etc. He never barked at anyone, never stopped people from stealing the flowers from the garden and never made any noise.

The family members felt what’s his use if he can not do anything a normal dog does.

One day a thief entered the house and the dog started licking his hands, he went away with the thief and became very friendly with him. The thief stole valuables from the house and ran away.
