What is a Noun

Definition of Noun:  A Noun is a name of a place, person, thing or animal. A Noun is a word which refers to any one of these. And saying that everything around us is Noun will not be wrong. Just Look around yourselves, everything in the room in which you are, at present, is also a Noun. The Laptop or the PC on which you are reading my article is also a Noun. The table in your room, the chair, the TV, books, your mobile etc, yes, everything is a Noun. This post will revolve around the definition of Noun, what is Noun and we also discuss the types of Noun and the examples of all the types of Noun. We also discuss individual Noun sentences with each type of Noun.

A Noun is a very important topic of Grammar. English Grammar has 8 Parts of Speech and Noun comes under those 8 Parts of Speech. A Grammar teacher never misses this topic when he teaches. I can say that because I am myself a Teacher 🙂 and I myself never miss this topic, when I teach English Grammar to my students.

Examples of Noun: Chair, Table, Car, Book, Pen, Notebook, Mobile, Airtel, Dr. Batra, Taj Mahal, Red Fort, New York, Rajasthan, State, Village, Teacher, Mr. Verma, Bugatti Veyron, Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mercedez Benz, etc.

Now it’s time to move onto the types of Noun with Noun sentences for each type of Noun. Basically, in English Grammar, there are 5 types of Noun. We will discuss each type of Noun one by one and then you can also check the sentences of Noun.

 

  • Proper Noun

Proper Noun is the first type of Noun. Proper Noun as the name suggests, refers to the name of a specific name of person, place, thing or animal. This refers to things which are popular and specific in their whole category. You will understand the Proper Noun with examples of Proper Noun. Like actors can be many but If I say, Amitabh Bachchan of Bollywood, then he is only one and only one. Monuments are many but if we say, Taj Mahal, the Taj Mahal here is the Proper Noun.

Examples of Proper Noun   Mr. Ramesh, The Gita, The Ramayana, The Himalayas, India, Australia, Dr. Batra, DAV Public School, Delhi University, Humayun tomb, Apple iPhone, etc these are some examples of the Proper Noun.

Sentences of Proper Noun

  1. Mr. Batra is a very famous doctor
  2. Hrithik Roshan is the most talented actor of Bollywood.
  3. DAV Public School is known for its excellence in Education.

All the underlined words above are proper nouns.

 

Common Noun

Common Noun refers to the whole category or the class. It does not refer to a single or specific thing. Like a doctor, can be any doctor, be it a cardiologist or an Ophthalmologist. Teacher, it can be any teacher, a Maths teacher, Science teacher or your English Teacher. Common name refers to the common names of places, person, things or animals.

Example of Common Noun:  Teacher, Doctor, Student, Actor, Minister, State, Village, Boy, Girl, Book, University, school, mountains, monuments.etc.

Sentences of Common Noun

  1. A teacher plays a very crucial role in the all-round development of a child.
  2. A Doctor is next to God, as he saves the lives of millions.

 

Collective Noun

Collective Noun refers to the collection of items and objects or a group of persons and animals( same). A Collective Noun helps us to group the similar things in English Grammar.

Examples of Collective Noun:  An army of soldiers, a flock of sheep, a board of directors, a herd of elephants, a bench of justice, a class of students etc

Sentences of Collective Noun:

  1. An army of soldiers marched towards the border.
  2. A herd of elephants just now passed away from here.

 

Abstract Noun

Abstract Noun refers to the words of feelings or things which can only be felt and can not be touched. Like you can see a happy person but can not see his happiness, you can just feel that he is happy. you can experience loneliness but can not see the loneliness.

Examples of Abstract Noun  Loneliness, Sadness, Happiness, ugliness, madness, anger, peace, hatred, love, jealousy, cleverness etc are the examples of Abstract Noun.

Sentences of Abstract Noun

  1. Loneliness can be very disturbing sometimes
  2. Happiness should be the main aim and motto of our lives.
  3. Anger can sometimes create a lot of troubles for you.

 

Material Noun

Material Noun refers to the names of raw materials in our daily life from which finished goods or things are made. You will better understand Material Noun from the examples of Material Noun.

Examples of Material Noun

Iron, Wood, Paper, Cement, Dough, Milk, Gold etc…

Sentences of Material Noun

1.The furniture in our homes is made up of the Wood.

2. Iron comes under the category of metals and doors are also made up of it.

3. The curd is made up of milk.
