Two Stories About Flying is a lesson in Class 10 English Literature book, The First flight. The chapter showcases two different stories about flying. In one story, the writer explains how a bird overcomes its fear and prepares itself for its first flight. In the second story a pilot flies his aeroplane in extremely bad weather but lands safely in a magical way. Two Stories About Flying NCERT Solutions
Question 1: Why was the young seagull afraid to fly? Do you think all young birds are afraid to make their first flight or are some birds more timid than others? Do you think a human baby also finds it a challenge to take its first steps?
Ans1: Whenever we try to do something for the first time, we may find ourselves anxious. There is always a feeling of fear in trying something new. The seagull was afraid because it was its first flight. Yes, this may happen with all the birds when they try to fly for the first time. Yes, a human baby also finds it difficult to take its steps.
Question 2: “The sight of the food maddened him.” What does this suggest? What compelled the young seagull to fly?
Ans 2: The seagull was quite hungry and it wanted to eat something. It was the hunger only that intensified its will to fly. It requested her mother to give her something to eat. When she saw that her mother is holding a piece of fish in her beak, it became quite happy. Her mother then stopped midway. It could not resist its hunger and wanted to eat something. Its hunger compelled him to fly keeping behind all the fears he had in his mind.
Question 3: They were beckoning to him, calling shrilly. “Why did the seagull’s father and mother threaten him and cajole him to fly?
Ans 3: The seagull’s parents were aware of the fear it had in its mind. They wanted it to overpower that fear. Its brothers and sisters were learning how to fly. The parents were teaching them but it did not have the courage to take the first step. The parents then called him shrilly and scolded it. They said let it be wherever it is and starve for the food so that it overpowers the fear of flight.
Question 4: Have you ever had a similar experience where your parents encouraged you to do something that you were too scared to try? Discuss in pairs or groups.
Ans 4: In this question, you have to share your own experience. The answer will vary for each person.
Question 5: In the case of a bird flying, it seems a natural act and a foregone conclusion that it should succeed. In the examples, you have given in answer to the previous question, was your success guaranteed, or was it important for you to try, regardless of the possibility of failure.

Two Stories About Flying NCERT Solutions: Story 2
Question 1: ” I’ll take the risk.” What is the risk? Why does the narrator take it?
Ans1: The risk was to fly the aeroplane in the stormy weather. The risk was quite hight as the clouds were black and the visibility was very low. He wanted to reach home on time as he wanted to enjoy an English breakfast.
Question 2: Describe the narrator’s experience as he flew the aeroplane into the storm?
Ans 2: The narrator had to face a lot of problems when it flew his aeroplane in the storm. The weather was totally unfavorable and he could not see anything. The compass became non-functional and it was rotating round and round. Not just the compass even the radio became dead and did not respond any signals. He felt helpless without these instruments. All of a sudden he saw another plane. The pilot of that plane came closer and waved at him. He was happy to find that now he will be able to come out of the black clouds. The pilot asked him to follow. He followed the pilot, the pilot started moving down. He did not have much fuel left in this aeroplane. After 5 to 10 minutes he could see a runway. He landed his plane safely on the runway.
Question 3: Why does the narrator say, “I landed and was not sorry to walk away from the old Dakota..?”
Ans 3: The weather was unfavourable. There were black clouds all around and the visibility was very poor. The overall experience of the narrator was very scary. He landed safely on th runway because of the other pilot. He landed safely that’s why he said that he was not sorry to walk away from the old Dakota. He also had a question in his mind that who the other pilot was!
Question 4: What made the women in the control center look at the narrator strangely?
Ans 4: The woman in the control centre looked strangely at the narrator because it was only his plane that was flew in the bad weather. She felt strange when the narrator asked about another pilot whose plane helped him in the bad weather.
Question 5: Who do you think helped the narrator to reach safely? Discuss this among yourselves and give reasons for your answer
Ans 5: Well, there can be different aspects of this answer. But we think that it was the narrator himself or his inner being which helped him to land safely in that bad weather. Undoubtedly he was a very good pilot. His inner voice helped him to take the right decision. He must have experienced hallucinations. Even the lady at the control center confirmed that no other plane was flying in that bad weather.
Question 1: Try to guess the meanings of the word ‘black’ in the sentences given below. Check the meanings in the dictionary and find out whether you have guessed right.

- The word black here suggests that the hands are not clean. They contain dirt.
- The taxi driver gave an angry look to Ratan. That’s why the word black has been used here.
- The Hiroshima incident was a very cruel incident. Black here means the cruelest crime against humanity.
- Here the word black means dark or poorly lit comedy.
- Black here means that the products are sold at a much higher price than their normal price.
- Here black and blue means very badly. The criminal was beaten badly by the group of villagers.
Question 2: Match the phrases given under Column A with their meanings given under Column B
